Description: "Baseball Immortals Collection: The Photography of Charles Martin Conlon 1905-1935". Significant collection of baseball related photography was the centerpiece of the "Baseball Americana" collection and was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute from October 1984 to October 1985 setting attendance records for a single exhibition of any type at the Portrait Gallery with over 1,000,000 visitors in its' first six months. The collection is comprised of (66) images that were deemed by a panel of experts to be the very best of Conlon's work. The images were printed in the early 1980's directly from Conlon's original glass negatives under the supervision of The Sporting News unlike most Conlon reproduction images which are produced from replacement negatives and safety film. The images are all matted and framed in stylish silver frames with neutral matting and either have inset photo and player descriptions or accompanying museum quality name plates. Included among the offered group are images of Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, Mack, Johnson, Hornsby, Alexander, and Conlon himself. Images sizes range from 6"x8" to 10"x12" including full margin notes by Conlon. In addition, the (66) images include three custom built transportation and storage crates, all related exhibition name plates, and signage, and a complete manifest listing from the exhibit. Given the extreme rarity of original Conlon photography and the quality of the offered group this presents a unique opportunity to acquire a significant intact baseball photographic exhibition that remains to date one of the most notable in the history of such exhibits.
