Lot Number: 1016

Description: Significant Satchell Paige and Josh Gibson autographed baseball. Without a doubt one of the finest signed baseballs that we have offered, a cream color Harridge AL baseball with special U.S.N. stampings on side panel signed by the two legendary Negro League Hall of Famers above the U.S.N. stamping. Paige has signed on top, "Satchell Paige Kansas City Monarchs Base Ball Club" and Gibson below, ""Josh" Gibson catcher Homestead Grays". Both signatures and salutations rate 9 out of 10. Ball itself has only some very minor age wear and has been well preserved in its' near original state. Ball originated from a Maryland family whose relative lived in Washington D.C. during the 1930's and 1940's. She was an avid baseball fan and regularly attended Senators games. In addition, she was dating a Naval officer and according to family history these signatures were obtained by her at the game where the two stars appeared. It is unclear, but thought to be the case that the ball was signed at some type of War Bond game or barnstorming game. In addition to a letter of provenance from the family the ball is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Kevin Keating who notes that there is known to exist a very similarly signed ball (although in lesser condition). Spectacular signed baseball by the single greatest hitter and pitcher in Negro League history and by some counts in basebal history as a whole: Ball: EX-EX/MT, Signatures: NM
