Lot Number: 967

Description: 1888 Chicago Ball Club cabinet photograph by Joseph Hall. Studio image of the White Sox featuring Cap Anson, Jimmy Ryan, and George Van Haltren retains extraordinary original contrast and clarity. Chicago was the runner up to the mighty Giants in 1888 by nine games. In a twist of irony, an African American mascot appears in the image resting his arm on the knee of the outspoken Cap Anson who was an instrumental early figure in barring minority players from the Major Leagues. The mount features bold and distinctive lettering in the bottom margin including "Chicago Ball Club, 1888", a listing of individuals pictured, and "Jos. Hall, Photo, Brooklyn, N.Y." Light to moderate soiling and general handling wear is evident with the blank back remaining fairly clean. Very faint staining is apparent at the lower left edges, mentioned only for complete accuracy. The visual impact of the piece overall is remarkable. This is the finest example of this scarce cabinet card we've encountered and it is being offered here at auction for the first time publicly: SGC 60 EX
