Description: Incredibly rare August 27, 1894 Charles Bennett benefit baseball game ticket. Charlie Bennett was a standout catcher for the Detroit Wolverines throughout the 1880s inclusive of the 1887 Championship season and then went on to play with the Boston Beaneaters for the final five seasons of his career. While hunting with Boston star pitcher John Clarkson in 1893, he suffered a tragic accident. During a stop by the train in Wellsville, Kansas, Charles Bennett stepped off to give his regards to an acquaintance and upon trying to step back aboard the train he fell beneath the wheels of the moving car. The accident left Bennett alive but both of his legs were lost thus ending his baseball career. In his honor, the Boston Red Stockings played a benefit game on August 27, 1894 at the Boston Base Ball Grounds. Over $6,000 was raised for Bennett and his family as the "home team" played against local collegiate players. Boxing great Jim Corbett played first base for the home team. Offered is an original ticket from that very benefit game with a printed admission cost of fifty cents. The ticket remains fully intact with a small corner crease and some typical light soiling. The offered example is the first of its type that we have encountered and is very possibly a unique surviving exemplar given its age and limited original production. Spectacular ticket rarity with direct 19th century Major League player provenance. Includes letter of provenance from the Boyle family: VG-EX
