Description: Set of (9) St. Louis Browns baseball cabinet photographs c.1887. Very fine original set from the Boyle collection to include nine original mounted player cabinet photographs in full St. Louis Browns uniform. The cabinets feature the identical images used for the Old Judge tobacco cards and cabinet cards of the same era bearing the Goodwin & Co. copyright dating of 1888 within the image. Players include Nat Hudson, Silver King, Ed Knouff, Arlie Latham, and Jack Boyle. The cabinet mounts are stamped by noted St. Louis photography studio "Scholten Portraits" at the bottom margin and have an ornate stamping on the reverse. Condition varies with three cards exhibiting some ink residue on the front (Hudson has printed name). All cards within the group have some surface soiling to the fronts and more so on the backs which could likely be improved with a light professional cleaning. Highly uncommon quantity of 19th century professional cabinet photographs from a direct player source. Includes letter of provenance from the Boyle family: Range GD-VG/EX
