Description: Scarce 1890 New York Giants Players League team cabinet photograph. Just a few days removed from having been a part of the National League Champion New York Giants team in 1889, Monte Ward met with other members of the player's Brotherhood association. The meeting focused on the increasing disgust players had with their ownership. Beginning in the 1890 season, a new league was formed called the "Players League". Through their strong ties with star players of the era, the league was quite successful, consistently outdrawing its National League and American Association counterparts. After its initial season, the players settled their dispute with the owners and ended the venture with most players rejoining National League teams. Offered is an exceedingly rare original team cabinet photograph of the 1890 New York Giants Players League team. Composite arrangement depicts vignette images of the players in uniform displayed on a diamond shaped baseball field. Players are identified under their respective images including Keefe, Connor, Ewing, O'Rourke, Whitney, and Whitney. The photographic diamond remains affixed to its original mount in black color with gilt decorated baseball equipment at the corners. Copyrighted by F.B. Wood 1890 at the bottom left corner. Condition is very fine with minimal age toning to the image while the black background remains remarkably clean given its original fragility, save for a small corner ding at the top right and a tiny pinhole at the top left corner. Without question one of the finest Players League photographic items extant with note to its superb original condition: EX
