Lot Number: 430

Description: Maurice Richard Montreal Canadiens professional model sweater jersey c.late 1960s. Universally regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League, Richard compiled 544 lifetime goals and led the Canadiens to an unprecedented four straight Stanley Cup Championships at the end of his career. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961, bypassing the normal three year waiting period, and saw his number retired by the Canadiens at that point as well. The wool sweater jersey retains its original Canadiens "C" logo patch on the front with Richard's number "9" on both sleeves and the back with all numerals remaining in their original condition. The material from which the Canadiens crest is made post-dates the playing career of Richard although the jersey was clearly intended for his use given the timely retiring of his uniform number. It is likely that the team prepared the shirt for an Old-Timers Day or other event honoring Richard. Heavy use is evident with surface pilling, wash wear to the numerals and patches, and general soiling/toning in appropriate usage areas. There are also some small holes to various areas of the jersey which are likely from a combination of use and age wear. "Tease Knitting Co." dry clean tag is found on the inside tail. The jersey originated from the collection of Don Biernat and is being offered for the first time publicly. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from Don Biernat: VG
