Lot Number: 916

Description: Lot of (23) 1888 Goodwin Champions N162 baseball tobacco cards. The offered group of 19th century color lithographic cards captures many of the most prominent subjects from the 1888 Goodwin champion series, including 6 of the 8 baseball players, John L. Sullivan, and Buffalo Bill Cody. Part of a larger (50) card set, which celebrated the most accomplished individuals in the fields of athletics and entertainment, the series is universally acclaimed as one of the most beautifully produced tobacco card issues of the time. Baseball players include Anson, Kelly, Keefe, Glasscock, Caruthers and Andrews. The card fronts appear NM, while the backs generally have a small degree of surface paper loss from adherence to album pages. Additional cards include Beekman (Lawn Tennis); Buffalo Bill (Champion of the Wild West Hunters); Captain Bogardus (Marksman); Dempsey* (Pugilist); D'Oro* (Billiards); Dwight (Lawn Tennis); Gaudaur (Oarsman); Hanlan* (Oarsman); Kilrain (Pugilist); Mitchell (Pugilist); Schaefer* (Billiards); Sears (Lawn Tennis); Sexton (Billiards); Teemer (Oarsman); Vignaux (Billiards); Voss (Strongest Man in the World). As with the baseball cards, the non-baseball issues are exceptional in appearance on the front, with varying degrees of paper loss on the reverse. A few exceptions, where noted (*), have small spots of paper loss to the front. Each card has been authenticated and encapsulated SGC Authentic.
