Lot Number: 79

Description: Lot of (3) New York Yankees payroll checks written to and endorsed by Leo Durocher, Fred Merkle and Carl Mays. Three notable baseball figures received these checks for their service as players for the New York Yankees in 1927, 1925 and 1922 respectively. The Durocher and Merkle checks are signed by Jacob Ruppert and Ed Barrow, while the Mays check is signed by Ruppert and T.L. Huston. Each player has added his endorsement signature to the reverse. Durocher and Merkle rate 7/8 out of 10, while Mays is a 6 out of 10. A second individual added his signature to the back of the Mays check. Each of these three men endured controversy in their careers. Durocher was an often disagreeable character, dogged by clashes with authority, umpires, and the press on his way to becoming the fifth winningest manager of all-time with 2,009 career victories. Merkle is best remembered for his famous base-running gaffe "Merkle's Boner" that cost the Giants a victory in 1908. Carl Mays, in spite of being one of the better right-handed pitchers of his era, is well known for throwing the pitch that struck Ray Chapman in the head on August 16, 1920, making Chapman the only major leaguer in history to die as a direct result of an on-field incident. Checks average EX. Includes LOA from JSA
