Description: 1923 Babe Ruth single signed baseball. Lightly toned Spalding "Official League" ball signed across the sweet spot by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen. Signature displays boldly rating 8/9 out of 10. A faint period ink inscription on a side panel indicates the ball was signed by Ruth on Sept. 4, 1923. On that date, New York Yankees pitcher Sam Jones threw a no hitter against the Athletics in Philadelphia, beating Bob Hasty 2û0. Babe Ruth made the only strikeout of the game to slip a point behind Detroit's Harry Heilmann in the batting race. Not until Ken Holtzman's no-hitter in 1969 would another pitcher record a no-hitter with no strikeouts. In a twilight charity game later that day, Babe Ruth played 1B for Philadelphia's Ascension Catholic Club and scored the only run in a 2û1 loss to the Lit Brothers. The inscription on the side panel of the offered ball affirms that it was in fact signed during the exhibition game and may have actually been used. Scarce early 1920s high grade Ruth single signed baseball dating to the prime era of Ruth's career. Includes LOA from JSA and letter of provenance: Ball: EX, Signature: NM
