Lot Number: 352

Description: Fine Ty Cobb professional model baseball bat c.1923-26. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 34 1/2" long and weighs 35oz. Handsomely grained bat exhibits evident use including ball marks, cleat marks, and grain swelling to the barrel end. Louisville Slugger mfg. stampings along with Cobb's facsimile name stamping remain very bold with a fine original patina. The bat is being offered for the first time publicly by the family of the original recipient who obtained it directly from Ty Cobb in the early 1920s. Mr. Joseph A. Richard resided in the Detroit, MI area and was an acquaintance of Ty Cobb. While attending a Tigers game in Detroit with his daughter, Mary Richard, they were invited to meet with Cobb after the game. It was during this meeting that Cobb presented the young girl with the offered bat, which has remained in her family until its current offering. Cobb game used bats of quality with definitive provenance are exceedingly rare given the scant details typically available from the era in which Cobb played. The majority of Cobb professional model bats to have been offered at auction frequently have no history or supporting provenance to compliment the bat specifications and characteristics. Very fine example as offered for the first time at auction. Includes LOA's from MEARS Authentication and Hunt Auctions, Inc., photo of Joseph Richard's employee identification badge from the "Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. in Detroit, MI", Xerox copy of Mary Richard's 1937 High School yearbook listing her Detroit area address, along with a letter of provenance from the family: EX
