Lot Number: 872

Description: Spalding "Wagon Tongue" model baseball bat attributed to James "Deacon" White c.1870-80s. Very early Spalding Wagon Tongue style ring bat retaining its original Spalding No. 000 logo at the centerbrand area along with "Wagon Tongue" in black lettering on the barrel end. The end of the barrel exhibits a moderate portion of its original painted black ring. The bat itself is of the highest quality for the era measuring 34 1/4" long and weighing 38oz. While it is unclear when and by whom the bat was used, there were several period newspaper accounts (one is included) dating to 1931 picturing White caring for his game used baseball bats including the bat he used to lead the league in hitting for 1877. Given the quality of the bat and its dating period, it is very likely that the offered example was in fact used by White and very possibly during games of significance. Includes letter of provenance from the White family: VG-EX
