Lot Number: 524

Description: Significant Roy Campanella 1951 National League Most Valuable Player award. The 1951 National League season would end with the Giants and Dodgers tied for first place. A three game playoff series followed with the teams splitting the first two games and the third game to be played in New York at the Polo Grounds. The rest was history as Bobby Thompson hit the famous 9th inning home run to send the Dodgers home for the winter. Although team success for the Dodgers ended with that playoff game, Roy Campanella finished the season with extraordinary numbers, having batted a career high of .325, and compiled a career high (164) hits, and (33) home runs. As such, he was awarded what would be the first of three NL MVP awards. Original black painted wooden plaque measures 16" in diameter with original surface. Applied to the front is an octagonal sterling silver placard with 10K gold K.Landis bust vignette, Roy Campanella nameplate, and 1951 year plate. Front is stamped "Sterling Dieges & Clust" at lower right; back of the plaque retains original Dieges & Clust metal tag and original brass ringlet for wall mounting. Very clean overall with only a few tiny paint flakes to the edge of the plaque and a few minute surface imperfections. The 1951 NL MVP award was the first that Roy Campanella would win and was originally offered as part of the Roy Campanella collection. We are happy to announce that the current owner will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation. The foundation benefits children stricken with physical disabilities through a variety of ways including scholarships. Includes letter of provenance from the Campanella family. One of the most significant Most Valuable Player Awards to have been offered at auction: EX/MT-NM
