Lot Number: 146

Description: Rare set of large format original photographs from the 1951 World Series picturing Mickey Mantle's injury. Pair of large format 11"x14" black and white images show, in sequence, the famous play in which Mickey Mantle severely injured his knee while pursuing a fly ball. Joe DiMaggio is shown catching the ball and then attending to Mantle with a group of Yankee players. One photo is identified and dated on the reverse with a New York Times stamping. The incident occurred on a fly ball hit by Willie Mays when DiMaggio called off Mantle to make the play. As Mantle tried to slow down, his foot became lodged in the turf and his right knee collapsed. Although Mantle would go on to have a fine career, it was this injury in his first World Series that affected him for the rest of his playing days. Includes letter of provenance from the DiMaggio family: EX-MT
