Description: October 1, 1949 Joe DiMaggio Sporting News award plaque. Significant presentational plaque given to Joe DiMaggio during ceremonies held at Yankee Stadium to honor his career achievements. Mahogany plaque measures 10"x12" with an applied sterling silver facade engraved, "To Joseph Paul DiMaggio Baseball Player Extraordinary from The Sporting News Presented at Yankee Stadium on October 1, 1949 in Recognition of his Outstanding Contributions to Baseball Throughout his Brilliant Career". The plaque was one of the more significant pieces presented to DiMaggio at the event, which was, by Joe's own account, one of the more gratifying of his career. The plaque has some typical light surface wear incl. a few scratches. Retains its original "Lambert Bros, NY" metal label at the bottom.
