Description: 1949 Joe DiMaggio All-Star game presentational box. Sterling silver trinket box presented to DiMaggio for his participation in the 1949 game played in Brooklyn. The game was notable in that it marked the first All-Star game in which African American players were allowed to play. Appropriately, the game took place at Ebbets Field, where Jackie Robinson had broken the Major League color barrier. The game was arguably the finest All-Star classic of Joe's career as he collected two hits with three runs batted in. Ironically, DiMaggio had been fighting an injury and was not elected to the game but was selected by manager Lou Boudreau as an additional player. Box is inscribed on the top, "All-Star Game Brooklyn July 12, 1949". Interestingly, DiMaggio's name is not on the box likely due to the fact that he was selected as a substitute. Marked with Gorham Co. sterling hallmarks on the base. 6 1/2" long: EX-MT.
