Lot Number: 751

Description: Scarce 1939 New York Yankees team auto. Red Rolfe professional model baseball bat. World Championship team signed bats of any era are notably rare with the offered example being one of the finest that we have encountered. Red Rolfe Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 34" long and weighs 35.8oz. The bat itself exhibits evident game usage incl. barrel wear and a repaired handle crack. The bat is inscribed at the handle end in period ink, "1939 World Series Champions Yankees" along with "Monte Pearson Two Hit Game". Based on this inscription, it is very likely that the offered bat was used during the second game of the 1939 series played at New York in which Yankees pitcher Monte Pearson took a no hitter into the seventh inning and ended the game giving up just two hits to the Reds. The bat has been signed by (30) members of the World Champion Yankees incl. DiMaggio, McCarthy, Dickey, Rolfe, Ruffing, Combs, Chandler, and Henrich. The Yankees' fallen hero, Lou Gehrig, also signed the bat during the season in which he had removed himself from the lineup in light of his tragic terminal illness. The signatures range from 7-9 out of 10 including a very strong Gehrig (uncommon for this point in his life). The surface of the bat has some age crazing, which at a few places has flaked, but in general remains stable so as to protect the signatures. Very rare and desirable signed item with relation to the 1939 World Champion Yankees is being offered for the first time publicly. Includes LOA's from James Spence Authentication (autographs) and Hunt Auctions,Inc. (bat): Bat: EX, Signatures: Range EX-NM
