Lot Number: 974

Description: Rare 1904 American League Imperial photographic display by Carl Horner. One of the rarest and most sought after early baseball related photographic display pieces, these were believed to have been given only to the managers and team executives of the teams depicted. Composite depicts a collage arrangement of the (8) American League teams-Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, New York, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, and Washington. Players include Cy Young, Addie Joss, Nap Lajoie, Eddie Plank, Rube Waddell, Willie Keeler, and Sam Crawford. Managers of the teams are in slightly larger square vignettes incl. Mack, Griffith, and Collins with AL President Ban Johnson in the center. Retains original mount which identifies teams, managers, and players in bottom margin. Very fine overall condition with strong clarity and contrast. The left edge of the display has some light age toning which could be improved with restoration, otherwise the piece has two very small areas of inpainting, a few surface scratches, and some wear to the corners of the mount incl. a chip at bottom left (not visible under matting). Impressive and important photographic rarity with the note that the 1904 version is uncommon in comparison to the 1903 piece of the same issue. 21"x22" matted and framed: VG-EX
