Lot Number: 130

Description: Significant July 31, 1941 Ted Williams first grand slam autographed baseball. Offered is a moderately toned William Harridge American League baseball which was hit for a grand slam by Ted Williams during a game played on July 31, 1941 against the St. Louis Browns. The Red Sox were trailing the Browns by a score of 7-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning at Fenway Park. After a few hits, a walk, and a hit batsman, the score was tied at 7-7 with the bases loaded. Ted Williams stepped to the plate and belted the first grand slam home run of his career. The young man who had caught the ball made his way to the dugout after the game and approached Williams who signed the ball on the sweet spot for the boy and added the following notations to the side panel, "Grand Slam Homer July 31, 1941 Off St. Louis". The 1941 season would end as Williams' greatest finishing with a .406 average (not equaled since), 37 home runs, and 145 RBI's. Historical home run baseballs of this nature are seldom available to the collecting public with note to the desirable period inscription by Williams himself. One of, if not, the most significant Williams home run baseballs to be offered publicly. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication and the ball has been certified by PSA/DNA: EX
