Description: Fine “Buxton Wonders” African American team photograph c.1900-1910. Rare large format studio portrait measures 16”x20” picturing 10 players in uniform with a manager and equipment posed in front. The team derived from the coal mining town of Buxton,Iowa whcich was predominantly African American and their record over a three year span was an impressive 93-3. Three players were identified through research of the orig. owner incl. George Neal who went on to play for the Kansas City,KS Giants and the Chicago Giants, Charley King, and a Mr. Bowman (The only two Negro Lg. players in that era named Bowman were Bill and Emmett).The image itself has some surface soiling which most likely could be cleaned and retains fine contrast. Slight horizontal area of moisture damage at bottom of image housed in its’ original floral decorated gesso frame. Strong eye appeal with folk art qualities and exceedingly rare to find African American team photos of this size and age: EX
