Description: Rare President Franklin Pierce auto. handwritten letter. Dated Dec. 10, 1869 handwritten four page (two pages front and back) letter penned on Pierce's personal stationary. Includes some substantive content regarding a recent illness that had befallen the former President (1853-1857) that Pierce calls "severe neuralgia". Pierce further writes, "Is it not gratifying to observe Hancock's brave, sensible, patriotic conduct of affairs at New Orleans? I think with you that there are significant indications of something like returning reason calculated to inspire hope of a restored country though I look forward to long year of burdensome taxation, trial, and suffering not only to the people of the Southern States who have so grievously wronged and outraged but to the middling interest of the whole country North, South, East, and West." Signed near the top of the first page where letter concludes, "Your Friend Franklin Pierce". Signature rates 7 out of 10 but does intersect with another word on the first page of the letter. Matted and framed with the original mailing envelope and a CDV of Pierce. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA J.Spence-S.Grad: EX
