It was awarded to Joe Frazier from the City of Philadelphia with the following inscription: The John Wanamaker Athletic Award Presented to Joe Frazier the Philadelphia Athlete who has done the most to reflect credit to Philadelphia 1968. It should be noted that it is widely recognized that Joe Frazier was the Philadelphia fighter used as the model for the enormously popular film series Rocky.
