Lot Number: 856

Description: Significant Roy Campanella 1951 National League Most Valuable Player award. The 1951 National League season would end with Giants and Dodgers tied for first place. A three game playoff series followed with the teams splitting the first two games and the third game to be played in New York at the Polo Grounds. The rest was history as Bobby Thomson hit the famous 9th inning home run to send the Dodgers home for the winter. Although team success for the Dodgers ended with that playoff game Roy Campanella finished the season with extraordinary numbers batting a career high .325, compiled a career high (164) hits, and hit (33) home runs. As such he was awarded what would be the first of three NL MVP awards. Original black painted wooden plaque measures 16" in diameter with original surface. Applied to the front is octagonal sterling silver placard with 10K gold K.Landis bust vignette, Roy Campanella nameplate, and 1951 year plate. Front is stamped "Sterling Dieges & Clust" at lower right, back of plaque retains original Dieges & Clust metal tag and original brass ringlet for wall mounting. Very clean overall with only a few tiny paint flakes to the edge of plaque and a few minute surface imperfections. As stated in the two previous lot descriptions the offered MVP award is among the finest ever offered with special mention that it was Roy's first MVP award. Includes letter of provenance from Campanella family: EX/MT-NM
