Description: Nov. 4, 1888 California League baseball program. Scarce early scorebook issued for (3) games played in San Francisco incl. the "Chicagos" and "All-Americans" featuring players such as Ward, Crane, Hanlon, and Ryan. Professional game is scored while the two amateur games remain unscored. Program is significant in that "Casey at the Bat" author Ernest Thayer admitted that he was inspired while watching California League players in 1888. Program lists Cooney and Blake among the players who are accepted by historians as the inspiration for several lines incl., "And when Cooney died at first and Barrows did the same, A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.": EX
