Lot Number: 216

Description: Rare early Spalding brand football helmet c.1900s. Rare early style is likely what the company referred to as model "No.60", the Double Crown Head Harness, and it appears to be of the highest quality construction of the time. Rigid top has a pair of ear flaps attached, each of which has well pronounced "Spalding" logo. Likely used at a high level of play as it was expertly modified in the period with a triangular wedge of leather added to expand the size. Ear flaps have been restitched (it unclear if this was done as a repair or as part of the modification to allow them to sit very slightly lower). In fine overall condition with the initials "JB" and "JWB" carved in and expected mild use/age related wear. The first of this type we can recall offering and an unusually early leather helmet: VG-EX with note to description
