Lot Number: 376

Description: Important and possibly unique 1948 Swell Sport Thrills #3 Jackie Robinson autographed Rookie card - the only signed example listed in PSA pop report (PSA: Card: 4.5 VG/EX+, PSA/DNA: Signature: 9). Original 1948 Swell Sport Thrills #2 Jackie Robinson "Dramatic Debut" card has been signed "Best Wishes Jackie Robinson" across the front. Ink signature is perfectly placed and has been graded "Mint 9" by PSA. Card shows a touch of light wear (most notably at the lower right corner which has a nearly incidental crease) and has been graded "VG-EX+ 4.5." Robinson had made his historic Major League debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 after signing a contract just (5) days prior to the start of the season. This short notice left makers of trading cards little time to include him in any releases slated for that year and the only cards on which he appeared that are believed to have been produced in 1947 specifically were issued by General Baking and released (primarily) as inserts to packages of Bond Bread in limited areas. His more mainstream releases, and what have come to be considered among his most coveted Rookie cards, were released in 1948 and include the iconic 1948 Leaf card and his Swell Sport Thrills card which is appropriately titled, "Dramatic Debut." Underscoring what they knew to be the importance of his entrance into the Major Leagues, the lengthy block of text on the back reads in part, "Few players ever started a season under more tense or dramatic conditions that Jackie Robinson...First of his race ever to play in the major leagues..." The offered autographed Swell Sport Thrills card categorically ranks among the rarest of all Jackie Robinson autographed Rookie cards with this being the only example which is listed on PSA's population report as having been authenticated and graded. It is worthy of mention that PSA lists (4) copies of his 1948 Leaf Rookie which have been authenticated. A unique and possibly singular opportunity to acquire one of the most important autographed sportscards dating to the time period in which it was issued: PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 with "9" graded autograph
