Description: 1954 Bill Russell "All College Most Valuable" (Player) Award. Figural trophy (15" tall) features a basketball player set atop metal upright on 5.75"x5" wooden base. A metal placard on the front reads, "All College Most Valuable 1954." Awarded to Bill Russell for his performance during the 1954 All-College Basketball Tournament as a member of the Los Angeles Dons. The Dons entered the Tournament as relative underdogs but quickly became crowd favorites en route to claiming their first Championship. Despite all of their on court success, the games were marred when Russell and fellow African American teammates, including K.C. Jones, became the targets of racism. An Oklahoma City hotel refused to admit several members and in protest the entire team chose to lodge in a closed college dorm. Touch of light natural age and handling wear with figural piece a replacement. Includes certificate of provenance from Bill Russell: EX-EX/MT
