The Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award is presented annually to individuals whose dedication to the ideals of sportsmanship has spanned decades and whose career in athletics has directly or indirectly impacted the world. In 2016, the award was appropriately bestowed upon Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Jim Brown. The three men were selected not only for their athletic achievements but equally for their lifetime of work for social justice. Russell, Jabbar, and Brown were present with Muhammad Ali at the historic summit in support of Ali's refusal to be drafted for the Vietnam War.
