Lot Number: 33

Description: 1940 Pepper Martin St. Louis Cardinals professional model home jersey (SGC/Grob: "Superior/Excellent"). Cream colored flannel with zipper closure has the "Cardinals" team logo embroidered on front and number "11" on back in red on blue felt. "Rawlings" tag appears in the collar with size (46) tag. "Pepper Martin" is embroidered on the front tail. Well preserved with use and wash wear evident throughout and there is a small (1/4" diameter) hole in the lower back and some discoloration/fraying to the fabric which lines the collar. Martin was a key figure in the Cardinals famed "Gashouse Gang" teams of the 1930s and was popular among teammates and fans. A fiery competitor he combined speed and savvy to lead the National League in stolen bases (3) times and was a member of the 1931 and 1934 World Series Championship teams. He has attained somewhat of a cult status among collectors and can be considered among the more desirable of any non-Hall of Fame player game jerseys from the time period. A rare style and seldom offered. Includes LOAs from Hunt Auctions and SGC/Grob (graded "Superior/Excellent"): EX
