Description: Johnny Bench "Jim Thorpe Award" for "1970 Outstanding Professional Athlete." Attractive 17.5" tall handled jug has a raised bust of Jim Thorpe on the front. The base, with various sports figure decorations, reads "Jim Thorpe Award, 1970 Outstanding Professional Athlete, Johnny Bench." It is marked on the underside, "Designed For The Jim Thorpe Athletic Award Committee, Yale, Oklahoma...Frankoma Pottery" with 1972 copyright date. The Committee was established in 1971 "to recognize and reward Oklahoma high school seniors for the kind of athletic excellency Jim Thorpe epitomized." It is unknown when the piece was presented to Bench but it certainly postdates the 1970 timeframe. No mentionable wear.
