Description: Important Johnny Bench 1968 Ford C. Frick Rookie of The Year Award. Black wooden plaque (9.5"x11") has applied "Ford C. Frick Award, Rookie of The Year, National League" emblem at the top with an engraved placard below reading "1968 Johnny Bench, Cincinnati Reds." A hint of light wear most notably takes the form of a few scattered nicks to the edges and a small chip to the back of one upper pointed corner. Selected 36th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1965 Amateur Draft, Johnny Bench joined their farm system at age (17) and displayed such talent that his jersey number was retired by their Carolina League affiliate after appearing in just (98) games. His call up to the Major Leagues came in 1967 when he appeared in (26) games for the Reds. While his hitting left much to be desired he made his mark with his defensive play and strong throwing arm. The stage was set for him to assume the role as full time Reds catcher in 1968 and he exploded onto the National League becoming the first catcher to win a Rookie of The Year Award and the first Rookie to win a Gold Glove. He would remain the Reds regular catcher for (13) seasons and along the way appeared in every All-Star Game played from 1968-1980, was named the Most Valuable Player of the National League twice, earned (10) Gold Gloves, and helped lead the team to a pair of storied World Series Championship titles. He remains among baseball's most significant 20th Century figures and one of Cincinnati's beloved icons. With regard to both the importance of the award and stature of the figure to whom it was bestowed we are confident in stating that the offered is one of the most significant pieces from the time period which we have ever handled. Includes letter of provenance from Johnny Bench: EX/MT
