Description: 1976 Mike Schmidt -Babe Ruth Crown+ for outstanding batting achievement. Figural brass award was made famous by Babe Ruth who donned a similar crown during the 1920s. The award was created in 1956 by the Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association to be presented to the player with the highest slugging percentage and the honor was still being bestowed in the 1980s as confirmed by both those which have surfaced and period newspaper accounts. The offered example was presented to Mike Schmidt in recognition of his 1976 season when he hit .262 with (38) homeruns and (107) R.B.I. An applied placard on the front reads -Babe Ruth Crown, Presented to Mike Schmidt For Outstanding Batting Achievement, 1976, Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association.+ To the right and left are crossed bats and baseball decoration (one of which has been replaced). The six +points+ of the crown each have an inset colored glass gemstone in baseball diamond shaped field. The body is inscribed with Schmidt+s 1976 statistics and makes note of his selection to the National League and Sporting News All-Star Teams. A highly prestigious award and one of the more significant which has been offered publicly with regard to notoriety of player and the season to which it relates.
