Lot Number: 16

Description: Rare Fred Merkle professional model baseball bat c.1911-15. Spalding brand bat with "Merkle" block lettered in the barrel end measures 35" long and weighs 40.1oz. Uncracked with strong usage wear evident throughout including ball, stitch, and cleat marks. Exceptional display value with bold and well pronounced markings along with a hand painted ring decoration at the center. Merkle played the better part of (16) Major League seasons and was a member of (5) National League pennant winning teams. Despite excellent play in the field and more than adequate skill at the plate he is best remembered for one of history's most notorious plays; an error in judgment while running the bases which ultimately cost his team, the Giants, the 1908 pennant and earned him the nickname "Bonehead." Includes LOAs from Hunt Auctions and PSA/DNA (GU 8): EX
