Lot Number: 138

Description: 1905 World Series program (at New York) - Mathewson beats Bender in the clinching game. Rare original program issued for the game played at the Polo Grounds has been scored neatly in pencil to reflect the Game #5 pitchers duel between Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Chief Bender. Mathewson put on what may be considered one of the greatest individual player performances in World Series history earning his 3rd shutout of the Series, even scoring his own insurance run in the 8th inning, to bring a Championship home to New York. The program displays as VG with the bulk of wear resulting from a heavy vertical crease which is just to the right of center. This fold effects all pages and has been professionally and expertly repaired in addition to some front cover inpainting and bound edge reinforcement.
