Lot Number: 118

Description: Significant 1929 Mel Ott single signed baseball with handwritten "42nd Homer" home run attribution. Red and black stitched Spalding J.Heydler Official National League baseball has been signed "Melvin Ott" across a side panel. It is inscribed in his hand on the opposite side, "42nd Homer Sept 24' 29." Both signature and inscription rate approx. 7-7/8 out of 10. The ball displays soiling and obvious use with some scattered surface wear. Ott was then twenty years old and had joined the Giants roster just three seasons earlier. At 5' 9" and (170) pounds he seemed an unlikely candidate to blossom into one of the National League's most feared power hitters but he would retire as its' first to hit the now benchmark level of (500) home runs. His (42) homeruns in 1929 proved to be a high watermark (he never again hit better than 38) but he would lead the N.L. a total of six times in his twenty-two year career. One of two home run attributed baseballs within the Ott Collection offering with special note to hand inscribed identification. Spectacular rarity as a milestone baseball with added desirability of a rare Mel Ott single signed example. Includes full LOA from JSA and letter of provenance from the Ott Family: Overall EX
