Description: Superb Roberto Clemente professional model baseball bat with direct provenance c.1967 (Maury Wills Collection). On the final day of the 1967 season Pittsburgh Pirates short stop Maury Wills was poised at a .299 batting average for the season. The first at bat of the day produced a base hit to boost Wills' average to .302 and at that time he was content with an excellent season. Out of contention, Roberto Clemente was given permission by Danny Murtaugh to manage the Pirates on that final game. While Wills was interested in ending his day after the first hit Clemente pleaded with him to stay in the game as he was pursuing Orlando Cepeda for the RBI title in the National League. Clemente won out and Maury Wills ended the day going 3 for 5 making Clemente very happy. As such, Roberto Clemente presented Wills with the offered game used bat as a token of thanks. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 36 1/2" long and weighs 37.1oz. The bat presents with exceptional use including ball marks, stitching impressions, and rack marks. Model number U1 stamped on knob end along with vintage "21" written in black marker. Absolutely superior example which ranks among the very finest Clemente game bats to have entered the marketplace with unimpeachable provenance. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and two page detailed hand written and signed letter of provenance from Maury Wills: EX
