Description: Scarce Christy Mathewson single signed baseball c.1918. Red and black stitched baseball of apparent official National League quality signed on side panel, "Christy Mathewson March 1918". Black fountain pen signature ranges from 2-6 out of 10 with varying fading. Inscription and date below rate 2/3 out of 10. The ball itself has extensive wear including areas of surface damage including heavy abrasions and in one case loss of leather. Mathewson had served as manager of the Cincinnatu Reds from 1916-1918 and enlisted in the Chemical Warfare division of the US Army in late 1918. Mathewson died on tuberculosis in 1925 making single signed baseballs of notable desire.
