Description: ±ECLe athletic sweater with attribution to the Eastern Colored League c.1920s. Navy blue wool sweater with applied ±ECLe lettering on breast area having possible attribution to the Eastern Colored League of the 1923-28 period. Beginning in 1923 as a result of a split from the Negro National League by the Hilldale Club and the Bacharach Giants the Eastern Colored League was formed with the help of noted promoter Nat Strong. The league lasted for several years providing a viable East Coast alternative and served in part to the inception of the inaugural 1924 Negro League World Series played in Kansas City. In 1928, the ECL disbanded due mostly to team and player dissension. The offered sweater retains its original manufacturer-s label inside the collar, ±American Hand Loom Honesdale, PAe which is located due east of Scranton, PA in relative proximity to several of the Pennsylvania teams of the ECL. Overall condition is very fine with only minor age wear.
