Description: Baseball folk art trompe-l'oeil still life painting by Ernest Albert Land c.1952. Exceptional quality oil on canvas painting executed in the classic trompe-l'oeil style translated as "deceive the eye" from French. This method of realism began in the Baroque period and was designed to present the viewer with a three dimensional appearance with succinct detail. The offered specimen captures the essence of baseball in the 1950s era with a cubby hole style wooden box containing a baseball, Andy Pafko model glove, color portrait of a boy in uniform, burned out cigarette, and an envelope postmarked 1952 from New York, NY. Artfully signed in camouflaged lettering by artist at bottom right edge of the box. Ernest Albert Land (1918-2006) was a prolific artist who work was highly regarded. Land served in World War II after which he worked as a professional Painter at Grand Central Galleries in New York City. In the 1960's, he settled in the Washington area. He painted for NASA at Bailey's Crossroads. He also restored the Jupitor Locomotive for the Smithsonian for the Bicentennial celebration. Overall sight size measures 18"x24" in a period oak frame. Fine original color and surface with one small patch repair to the bottom left background area under the glove and a tiny repaired hole at top border mentioned for accuracy only.
