Description: Exceptional Roberto Clemente 1971 World Series Most Valuable Player Award. The 1971 World Series pitted the American League powerhouse Baltimore Orioles against the National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates. The Orioles featured a stellar pitching staff with the Pirates relying heavily on an exceptional batting lineup led by veteran right fielder, Roberto Clemente. Clemente led the Pirates to a World Championship in a seven game series in which he hit safely in all games just as he had in the 1960 World Series. In recognition of his outstanding play Clemente was awarded with the Babe Ruth Award as the Most Valuable Player of the 1971 World Series. Roberto batted .429 in the seven game series and played exceptional defense as well. He was the first Latin American and Caribbean player to be awarded the Most Valuable Player in a World Series. Black painted wooden plaque in oval form measures 13" tall with applied silver plated placard affixed to the front. "The Babe Ruth Award" titling found at top inscribed to "Roberto Clemente, Pittsburgh Pirates" as the "Most Outstanding Player of the 1971 World Series". Black painted plaque exhibits some typical light surface wear to include few scratches and edge dings. Silver placard displays beautifully with only a few relatively minor surface scratches. Highly desirable award was one of the more prestigious honors of Clemente's career and arguably is among the most significant World Series MVP awards to have been offered at public auction.
