Lot Number: 183

Description: Exceedingly rare c.1925-28 Walter Johnson professional model baseball bat (PSA "GU 8"). Hand turned Louisville Slugger 125 model bat with Johnson facsimile signature burned into the barrel measures 35" long and weighs 39.4oz. Strong usage wear is evident throughout with ball and cleat marks along with mild grain swelling. Johnson is revered as one of baseball's greatest pitchers however, his accomplishments on the mound often overshadow his prowess at the plate. Johnson was perhaps the best hitting pitcher of his time and his .433 average in 1925 remains the highest ever recorded by a pitcher. By nature of their limited plate appearances bats made for and issued to pitchers are understandably rare. The offered example is only the second Walter Johnson signature model Louisville Slugger to have come to auction and represents what might be a unique opportunity. In fine overall condition with some minor and expert repairs to reverse of the barrel to secure grain swelling which was due to repeated ball contact. Includes LOAs from PSA/DNA ("GU 8"), MEARS ("A8"), and Hunt Auctions: EX
