Description: Joe Wood c.1912 presentational pocket watch in recognition of his pitching and the Boston Red Sox Championship. Stately 14k gold pocket watch by Dubois with Longines movement has "JW" initials engraved on outer casing and lengthy inscription on the interior reading in full, "Presented to Joe Wood By His Friend A.E. Smith, In appreciation of his Splendid Pitching which brought the World's Championship to Boston, 1912." Wood, 22 years old in 1912, put forth an exceptional season long effort winning (34) games en route to a World Series apperance against the New York Giants. In a now Legendary performance he faced Christy Mathewson twice and is credited with (3) of the Red Sox wins including the final and deciding Game (8). In a 1981 New Yorker article Wood recounted Smith, a prominent Boston area businessman, gifting him the watch stating, "I've had that watch for 68 years...I always carried it in my vest pocket." Watch face, set below glass, has some minor scattered cracks/fissures and a small area of loss at lower left. The casing has light to moderate general age and handling wear along with a small indentation at one side. Desirable period piece as relates to perhaps the most important member of the 1912 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox team.
