Description: Rare and significant Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard autographed photograph. During the 1920 NFL (APFA) season Fritz Pollard broke into the league with the Akron Pros team and along with Bobby Marshall was one of the first two African American players in the league. Pollard led his Akron team to the championship for the 1920 season and returned in 1921 as not only the team running back but as its coach marking the first African American coach for an NFL team. Pollard went on to play for several other teams until he, and nine other African American players, were removed from the league in 1926. Offered is an exceedingly rare original mounted image of Pollard pictured in full football uniform having been signed at bottom right, "Sincerely Fritz Pollard." Black fountain pen signature rates 7 out of 10. Image size measures 7 1/2"x10" matted and framed with flawless original contrast and clean surface. Pollard was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and ranks among the more significant contributors to the game during its formative years. First playing career era exemplar we have handled.
