Lot Number: 42

Description: Exceedingly scarce Howland/Thayer style baseball catcher's mask c.1870-1880s. Offered is one of the rarest mediums of 19th century baseball equipment with the collecting hobby fashioned in the manner of the early catcher's masks invented by Yale baseball manager Fred Thayer in 1878. This particular specimen is one of only two such masks that we have handled in our 22 year company history. Measuring 12" tall the mask exhibits a horizontal bar format with early wrought iron wire protective supports connecting at top and bottom third portions of mask. Original canvas encased padding encircles the mask with period twine attachment. Fine original condition with primitive eye appeal appropriate to its designation as one of the earliest forms of baseball equipment. Absolutely incredible scarcity: VG-VG/EX
