Description: Significant 1910 Philadelphia Athletics World Championship presentational pin. As the country completed the first decade of the 20th century the Philadelphia Athletics continued their dominance of the baseball world capturing a World Championship over the Chicago Cubs. Champions in 1902 and 1905 the mighty A+s team of 1910 may well have been the finest of their era finishing with a record of 102-48 en route to a resounding 4 games to 1 victory over the Cubs in the World Series. Although a powerful team in a major metropolitan area the Athletics had not generally awarded their players and staff with lavish presentational jewelry on the occasion of their championships as some other teams had done such as the Chicago and Boston clubs. Offered is an outstanding quality 1910 World Championship medal which we believe to have been presented to players and team dignitaries as a result of the 1910 title. Top of the medal features an enamelwork pennant shaped pin back having inlaid white elephant mascot and -A+ team insignia. Attached blue silk ribbon displays, -Philadelphia Athletics Champions 1910+ in silver with a suspended silver elephant beneath. Total length of 4 _+ with pennant marked by prestigious Caldwell Co. of Philadelphia on the reverse. The piece remains in fine overall condition with some tape reinforcement to the reverse of the silk ribbon for some partial separations. This example presents as one of only three known surviving specimens adding credence to a limited original production quantity commensurate with team presentation. Interestingly this style of presentational pin served as the model for the highly desirable Athletics World Series press pins issued for the 1911, 1913, and 1914 contests of the same Caldwell Badge Co. manufacture. Factoring overall quality and similarity to related World Champion presentational pieces, coupled with the rarity of such pieces during the early part of the century, we believe this piece to have been presented to a member of the Athletics (player or team related) for the World Championship title of 1910. Superb and significant World Series presentational piece with relation to one of the greatest teams in the history of the game: EX (with note to ribbon reinforcement)
