Lot Number: 74

Description: Important Willie Shoemaker attributed hat, helmet, and boots from his first winning ride in 1949 with strong provenance. Trio of pieces as relate to the first win of Shoemaker's celebrated career as one of the greatest jockeys of all time to include: green and white silk hat with stitched in likeness of a shoe on back with "maker" directly to the right. In very fine condition overall with light/moderate evident usage wear; helmet insert with considerably more wear visible and manufacturer's stampings largely worn off (size "7" label remains intact); and well worn brown and black leather riding boots with partially visible interior "Kroop's" manufacturer's and size "1 1/2" stampings. Shoemaker is shown in included Polaroid snapshot seated within his home as these pieces are displayed next to him and a notarized affidavit (signed on his behalf by a caretaker) reads in part, "...I have been requested by Mr. Shoemaker to signed below acknowledging that recognizes the tack (helmet, cap, and boots) that are in possession of William Saunders to be the tack that he used for his first winning ride, Shafter V at Golden Gate April 20, 1949." Also referenced is additional history relayed in copy of a Shoemaker signed statement which traces ownership through jockey and Chief Racing Stewart for California Alfred Shelhamer whom Shoemaker had gifted the material. Rare and significant offering of early career materials as related to one of the most storied riders of all-time likely represents a singular opportunity with particular note to the strong chain of provenance: Overall EX
