Lot Number: 443

Description: 1939-1940 Francisco "Pancho" Coimbre signed Leones de Ponce Player's Contract. Original contract as signed by Coimbre along with a pair of witnesses and both the team and League Presidents. Vintage fountain pen signatures rate 8/9 out of 10. Contract displays light even toning with some wear/chipping at corners/edges and pair of filing holes punched at top edge. In addition to time spent playing in the Negro Leagues where he twice made the East/West All-Star teams, Coimbre remains an extremely important figure relative to baseball in Puerto Rico. He was a member of (5) Championship teams while with the Leones, had a stretch of (4) consecutive seasons starting in 1939 in which he did not strike out, won a pair of batting titles, and was named MVP in 1943. While scouting for the Pittsburgh Pirates he suggested the signing of Roberto Clemente who would later proclaim that had Coimbre been allowed to play in the Major Leagues he would have been one of the best ever. Includes auction LOA from JSA: Contract EX, Sigs. NM-MT
