Lot Number: 494

Description: Poignant Jackie Robinson handwritten and signed letter dating to shortly after his historic 1947 debut. Fine content letter mailed on May 2, 1947 from Brooklyn, New York, just seventeen days after his April 15th debut in the Major Leagues. By far the most important letter as relates both to Robinson's career and the historic time period in which it was sent that we have seen or handled. Reads in part, "Dear Charles, I want to thank you and the others...I am really glad to have received just such a letter. No I was not surprised to receive a letter from the South because there are many more Southerners who share the same feelings you have and I am sure that it will be fellows like yourselves that will go a long way in furthering the democratic way of life most of us want." Signed at close, "Sincerely, Jackie Robinson." Having been stored within its original mailing envelope, the letter has typical light horizontal fold at center and a touch of minimal wear. Fountain pen signature/handwriting rate strong 8/9 out of 10. Envelope, fully addressed in Robinson's hand, has "Brooklyn Dodgers, Brooklyn NY" noted as the return address (when torn open, this return address portion was affected). Includes auction LOA from JSA: Letter EX/MT-NM, Envelope EX
