Lot Number: 197

Description: Significant Project Mercury U.S. Astronauts autographed baseball. Moderately toned Giles NL baseball as obtained by Warren Spahn having been signed by four of the original "Mercury Seven" US Astronauts whom were the first Americans to travel into space. Signatures include Scott Carpenter, Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and Wally Schirra. The wives of Carpenter, Sheppard, and Grissom have also signed the ball as well. Signatures remain in fine original condition ranging from 8 to 9 out of 10. Small hand drawn Project Mercury symbol is drawn on the ball presumably in Shepard's hand who has also inscribed the ball to "Warren with regards". The baseball was obtained on the occasion of Spahn visiting the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas in 1965. Tragically, Grissom would perish in a horrific fire during the pre-launch sequence of the Apollo I mission along with colleagues Ed White and Roger Chaffee. Unique and significant signed baseball with uncommon first source provenance having originated directly from the collection of Warren Spahn. Includes auction LOA from JSA along with a vintage NASA 8"x10" black and white photo picturing Grissom, Spahn, and White: Ball: EX, Signatures: Range EX-NM
