Description: Exceptional and scarce Sammy Baugh Washington Redskins professional model jersey c.1940s. Sammy Baugh arrived on the pro football scene in 1937 after the Washington Redskins made the Texas Christian star their first round pick. In the era of Baugh's debut, pro football was largely a grind-it-out ground game. Over the course of Baugh's 16-year career, he was a catalyst in the evolution of the forward pass. Possessing unparalleled accuracy, Baugh won a record-setting six NFL passing titles and earned first-team All-NFL honors seven times in his career. One of his best single performances came on "Sammy Baugh Day" in 1947 when he passed for 355 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Chicago Cardinals, that season's eventual champions. Offered is a striking original maroon jersey retaining its original "33" uniform numbers on both front and back. Majority of the crotch flap area remains intact which has been cut at the bottom presumably in the period as evidenced on another documented Baugh game jersey likely due to player preference. The shirt shows evident use including a wonderful period team repair to the first "3" on the back of the jersey. With the lone exception of a 1937 Baugh jersey, offered several years ago, this particular specimen stands as the only other documented exemplar of its type to have entered the marketplace. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the 17-member charter class of 1963, Sammy Baugh is universally heralded as one the greatest players who ever took to the gridiron. It is safe to say that outside of a major institution there are few football jerseys of this caliber in existence. Notable rarity with unimpeachable primary team sourced provenance. Includes letter of provenance from the consignor and LOA from Hunt Auctions (jersey): EX
